Dr. Matisse Huiskens is a Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art at the Department of History and Art History, Utrecht University, Netherlands. He holds a joint PhD in History of Art from the University of Amsterdam and University of Salerno (2019–2023), and prior degrees including an RMA (cum laude) and BA (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on art’s engagement with political ideologies, migration, and national identities, particularly in 20th–21st century contexts. Current projects include a book on Fred Carasso’s exile in the Low Countries and a study of Irish art migration post-1950s, with special attention to Paul O'Neill.
He has held roles as a Research Fellow at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) and the Dutch Institute for Art History in Florence (NIKI). In 2024, he co-taught a KNIR course on artists in residence in Rome. Collaborating with Melle van Maanen, he is curating an exhibition on post-war art movements at Atelier Volten, Amsterdam (2026).
Teaching includes courses such as 'The Art of Research' and 'Global Visions in Art and Art History'. His work integrates art historiography, curatorial practices, and societal change, with a focus on mobility and cultural exchange across Europe.
