Maria Forcellino is an Affiliated Researcher at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON) within the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University since 2018. She previously held the position of Assistant Professor of Art History (14th-18th Century) at the University of Salerno from 1996 to 2010 and was a Fellow at the Royal Dutch Institute in Rome (KNIR, 2015-2017). Her academic focus lies in Renaissance Art History and Eighteenth-Century Cultural Studies.

Forcellino's research spans two primary areas: Renaissance Studies (Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci) and Eighteenth-Century Cultural Studies (Grand Tour, Pompeii excavations). Her recent work on Leonardo da Vinci's Roman visit (1513-1516) includes analyses of the Adriano VI, Michelangelo e la «S.ta memoria de Julio» (2024) and Suggestioni leonardesche nella sala delle Nozze di Alessandro e Rossane (2023), alongside ongoing monographic research on Johan Meerman's Grand Tour. Publications highlight interdisciplinary themes, such as Michelangelo's religious works for Vittoria Colonna and the archaeological rediscovery of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
Her scholarly output includes contributions to key journals like Achademia Leonardi Vinci and Incontri. Notable
