Dr. Matilde Cartolari is a University Assistant (Post-Doc) at the University of Vienna's Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, specifically within the Cultural Heritage Studies department at the Faculty Center for Transdisciplinary Historical and Cultural Studies. Her research focuses on museum history, art conservation practices, and Fascist cultural diplomacy in early 20th-century Europe. She holds a PhD from Technische Universität Berlin (cotutelle with University of Udine) and completed her earlier studies at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Warburg Institute in London.
Key professional milestones include coordinating the provenance research blog The Lives of Pictures with the Staatliche Museen Berlin and serving as a fellow of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (2018–2021). Her doctoral thesis on Italian Old Master exhibitions under Fascist cultural diplomacy earned prestigious awards, including the Willibald-Sauerländer-Preis and the Fondazione Spadolini Special Medal.
Her research spans topics such as transnational art markets, museum historiography, and the intersection of art conservation with political agendas.
