Dr. Matias Yoma is a Lecturer in Physiotherapy at Manchester Metropolitan University's Department of Health Professions within the Faculty of Health and Education. He holds professional memberships with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). His expertise focuses on biomechanics, athlete screening, injury prediction, and management, particularly in sports-related musculoskeletal issues. Yoma supervises Master’s students in advanced physiotherapy and contributes to teaching on BSc Physiotherapy and MSc Advanced Physiotherapy programs.
Yoma’s research explores training loads’ impact on shoulder physical qualities in swimmers, with a focus on musculoskeletal adaptations, injury prevention, and rehabilitation outcomes. His work has been published in journals like the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy and British Journal of Sports Medicine. He has presented at conferences such as the European Society of Biomechanics and European Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation.
Academically, Yoma earned his PhD in Rehabilitation from the University of Salford (2021), MSc in Advanced Physiotherapy from Manchester Metropolitan University (2017), and graduated as a physiotherapist from Universidad de Chile (2010). His doctoral research investigated swim training loads’ effects on shoulder physical qualities, earning a PhD Academy Award.
