Dr. Mathilde Julla-Marcy is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education at Nantes University, where she has been employed since 2020. She serves as Deputy Director of the Nantes Center for Sociology (CENS) and Co-director of the Master's in Sports Management 'Policies, expertise and development of sports services.' Dr. Julla-Marcy is also elected to the board of directors of the UFR STAPS, Nantes University, and the French-speaking Society for the Sociology of Sport.
Dr. Julla-Marcy holds a Doctorate in STAPS (Sciences and Techniques of Physical and Sports Activities) from Paris Nanterre University, where she completed her thesis titled 'Specialists in versatility. A sociological analysis of careers in multidisciplinary sports (modern pentathlon, heptathlon/decathlon)' under the supervision of Olivier Le Noé. Prior to her current position, she was a contractual doctoral student with teaching mission then ATER (temporary teaching and research assistant) at the UFR STAPS of the University of Paris Nanterre.
Dr. Julla-Marcy's research focuses on the sociology of sports, with particular emphasis on careers and sports socialization, high-level sports training, and multidisciplinary sports and versatility. Her work often examines how athletes navigate careers in sports requiring multiple disciplines, such as modern pentathlon, heptathlon, and decathlon. She has published extensively on topics including athletic professionalism, body aesthetics in combined events, and the organizational dynamics of high-performance sports staff.
Her recent publications show a trend toward examining the intersection of sports sociology with broader social issues, including gender inequalities in academic medicine, work-life balance for high-performance coaches, and the social dimensions of hospital-university careers. Dr. Julla-Marcy frequently collaborates with researchers like Sylvaine Derycke, Lucie Forté, and Hélène Joncheray on projects funded by INSEP, the French Athletics Federation, and the Ministry of National Education, Youth, and Sports.
