Mathias Sinning

Mathias Sinning is a Professor of Economics at the Australian National University (ANU) Crawford School of Public Policy, affiliated with the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics and the Tax & Transfer Policy Institute (TTPI). He holds a PhD from the University of Bochum and a Masters from the University of Heidelberg. His research focuses on econometric methods for estimating treatment effects, particularly applied to tax compliance, public policy, and behavioral economics. He leads major projects on nudges in environmental policy (funded by the Australian Research Council) and has collaborated with tax agencies globally, including in PNG and Indonesia.

He has held visiting roles at Princeton University and Peking University, and is a Research Fellow at RWI Leibniz Institute and IZA, as well as a J-PAL Affiliate. His work includes designing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate policy impacts, with notable contributions on tax payment behavior, fine compliance, and labor market dynamics. Key publications include studies on quantile treatment effects, behavioral tax compliance strategies, and the efficacy of social norms vs enforcement mechanisms in policy implementation.
