Xue Dong

Dr. Xue (Sarah) Dong is a Research Fellow at the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University. She is a core member of the ANU Indonesia Project and serves as an editor for the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Economics (2014) from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor in Actuarial Science with a Minor in Business from the University of Alberta.

Research Interests center on labour market dynamics, women's economic empowerment, tax compliance, and higher education policy. Current projects explore Indonesia's economic landscape, including strategies to improve tax compliance for micro and small businesses, incentives for government scholarship applications, and the socioeconomic implications of Indonesia's expanding middle class on women's marriage and fertility decisions.

Publications span top-tier journals like Journal of Development Economics and Journal of Behavioural and Experimental Economics, with recent work analyzing the effects of direct mayoral elections on public spending, digital business registration, and household decision-making in Indonesia. Her 2023 edited volume Gender Equality and Diversity in Indonesia remains a key reference.

Grants & Collaborations include leading the project Encouraging Formal Tax Registration of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Indonesia (2018–2020) and contributing to the Indonesia Project Phase IV (2016–2021) and Phase V (2022–2026). She collaborates with institutions like the Australian Taxation Office and ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.
