Mathias Reynaert

Mathias Reynaert is a Professor of Economics at the Toulouse School of Economics, University of Toulouse Capitole. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Leuven and the University of Antwerp in 2015 and has worked at TSE ever since. His research focuses primarily on environmental policy in the European Union, with expertise in empirical industrial organization and environmental economics.

Reynaert earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Leuven and the University of Antwerp in 2015. Prior to his current position as Professor, he served as an Assistant Professor at Toulouse School of Economics from 2015 to 2022. He has held visiting positions at MIT CEEPR (2019) and the University of Leuven (2018).

Professor Reynaert's research centers on environmental economics and empirical industrial organization, with a particular focus on environmental policy in the European Union. His work examines topics including emission standards in the automobile market, consumer valuation of fuel costs, protected area policies, and the economic impacts of environmental regulations. His research employs sophisticated econometric methods to analyze large datasets and evaluate policy effectiveness.

His recent publications reveal a strong trend toward analyzing the intersection of environmental policy and industrial organization, particularly in the European context. Reynaert's work often focuses on how firms respond to environmental regulations and how consumers value environmental attributes in their purchasing decisions. A significant portion of his research examines the automobile market, analyzing fuel economy standards, emission regulations, and consumer behavior regarding electric vehicles.

His current research is significantly supported by an ERC Starting Grant (2023-2028), which provides substantial funding for his work on environmental economics and industrial organization.

Professor Reynaert is actively involved in the academic community through his editorial roles as Associate Editor at Econometrica (2025-2028) and editorial board member at Review of Economic Studies (2024-2027). He regularly organizes academic events including the TSE Environmental Seminar and the Toulouse Conference on the Economics of Energy and Climate.
