Mathias Kronlund

Mathias Kronlund is an Associate Professor of Finance at the Gies College of Business, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a Research Member of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI). He holds a Ph.D. and MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and an M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and Management from Aalto University. His research focuses on empirical corporate finance, financial institutions, and market dynamics, with notable work on mutual funds, credit markets, and corporate governance.

Education: Ph.D. & MBA in Finance (2011, University of Chicago); M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and Management (2006, Aalto University). His research has been recognized with awards including the FMA Best Paper on Investments (2019) and the AIM Distinguished Paper Award (2019). He serves on academic program committees for major conferences and referees for top journals like the Journal of Finance and Review of Financial Studies.

Teaching excellence awards include being ranked as one of the top teachers by students at the University of Illinois (2016–2020, 2024) and finalist for the College of Business Alumni Teaching Award (2018). He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in corporate finance and empirical asset pricing. Professional service includes roles in curriculum design, faculty recruitment, and grievance committees at both UIUC and Tulane University.

His research has been presented at over 30 universities globally and institutions like the Federal Reserve Banks and SEC. Notable contributions include studies on short-term incentives in firms, cash retention policies, and stale pricing in fixed income funds. He advises doctoral students and maintains active collaborations with global finance experts.
