Dr. Mathias Hansen is a Research Fellow at Monash University's Biochemistry & Molecular Biology department, affiliated with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. His primary research focuses on structural and computational biology, specifically enzyme engineering and biosynthetic pathway evolution.
Education: BSc/MSc from University of Copenhagen (RNA-protein interactions under Prof. Peter Brodersen), PhD from Monash University (2021) studying antibiotic biosynthetic enzymes under Prof. Max Cryle.
Research interests include enzyme structure-function relationships, ancestral sequence reconstruction, X-ray crystallography of biosynthetic enzymes (cytochrome P450s/non-ribosomal peptide synthetases), and applying machine learning to enzyme design for sustainable chemistry. Current work emphasizes engineering glycopeptide antibiotics to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria.
Leading a 2025-2026 project: 'Engineering glycopeptide antibiotic biosynthesis to produce novel antibiotics' as Chief Investigator. Collaborations include teams in Germany (Crüsemann, Ziemert) and Australia (Cryle, Stegmann).
Publications span structural enzymology, RiPP biosynthesis, and antibiotic evolution, with recent works highlighted in Nature Communications, ACS Catalysis, and Current Opinion in Biotechnology.
