University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Viennaمعرفی
Mathias Hammerl is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Building Construction, Timber Construction and Circular Construction, Department of Landscape, Water and Infrastructure, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). He holds a doctoral degree in technical natural sciences and is actively engaged in research on advanced structural materials and sustainable construction systems.
Research Interests: His work focuses on structural engineering, particularly the development and testing of innovative concrete systems reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP), including carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP). His research spans material-efficient concrete girders, prestressed thin-walled elements, bond behavior of non-metallic reinforcement, and life cycle assessment of alternative reinforcement materials. He integrates experimental testing with numerical modeling to evaluate structural performance and sustainability.
Publication Trends: His recent publications (2021–2025) consistently address high-performance concrete (HPC, UHPC) elements reinforced with FRP, emphasizing material efficiency, structural behavior under bending and prestressing, and environmental impacts. A strong trend toward sustainability is evident through life cycle assessments and circular construction principles.
Scientific Contributions:
- Developed and tested thin-walled and filigree concrete elements using CFRP reinforcement.
- Investigated bond anchorage mechanisms for FRP bars, including wrapped configurations.
- Conducted environmental assessments comparing CFRP to traditional steel reinforcement.
- Explored topology optimization for material-efficient structural forms.
Advising and Community Engagement: Mathias Hammerl has supervised several master’s theses on topics related to carbon concrete, prestressed systems, and circular construction. He has contributed to multiple research projects funded by FFG and other agencies, producing technical reports and project deliverables. He regularly presents his work at international conferences such as the fib Symposium and HiPerMat.
Laboratories and Teams: He is part of the research team led by Benjamin Kromoser at BOKU, working within the Institute of Building Construction, Timber Construction and Circular Construction. The team conducts experimental and numerical research on next-generation concrete technologies and sustainable building systems.
