Professor Mathew Owens is the Professor of Space Physics at the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading. His research focuses on solar physics, space weather, and heliospheric processes, particularly the Sun’s impact on Earth’s infrastructure and technology. He leads projects in empirical space weather forecasting, including the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre collaboration. Owens is involved in major missions like ESA’s Solar Orbiter, contributing to magnetometer experiments. His work bridges observational data and computational models, emphasizing solar wind dynamics, coronal mass ejections, and solar magnetic field reconstruction. He advises numerous PhD and master’s students, fostering their engagement with cutting-edge space physics research. Owens has secured grants from STFC, ESA, NERC, and the Leverhulme Trust, supporting projects on solar variability and space climate reconstructions. His research outputs span over 200 peer-reviewed articles, with contributions to journals like Space Weather, Astrophysical Journal, and Geophysical Research Letters. Beyond academia, he serves on editorial boards and national committees, including the MIST council and UK space weather initiatives.
