Dr. Mathew Hill is an Assistant Professor in Ageing and Psychophysiology at Coventry University's Centre for Physical Activity, Sport and Exercise Sciences (PASES). He holds editorial roles as Associate Editor for BMC Sport Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation and Review Editor for Frontiers in Aging. His research focuses on balance, falls, and neural control of posture/movement, particularly investigating psycho/physiological risk factors for falls and developing fall prevention strategies. He employs interdisciplinary methods including EEG, EMG, 3D motion capture, and physiological assessments like EDA and HRV.
After earning his PhD in Aging and Human Movement Science from Coventry University (2015), he joined the University of Northampton before returning to Coventry in 2017. His work addresses age- and disease-related balance deficits, with a current emphasis on fear of falling and interventions to mitigate its effects. Recent studies explore arm movement strategies, environmental threats, and physiological feedback in balance control. He supervises PhD students exploring topics like postural threat responses and novel treatment strategies.
His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), addressing aging populations and fall-related injuries. Collaborations span international institutions, focusing on balance training complexity, muscle fatigue, and virtual environment comparisons. He actively engages in translational research, translating basic science findings into clinical and community interventions to reduce fall prevalence.
