Dr. Mathew Abbott is a Senior Lecturer in Humanities and Social Sciences at Federation University Australia, affiliated with the Institute of Education, Arts and Community (IEAC). He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney (2012) and a First Class Honours degree from the Australian National University (2005), where he received the Quentin Gibson Prize and University Medal. Abbott specializes in aesthetics, political philosophy, and film-philosophy, with particular focus on modern European philosophy, film theory, and ethical inquiry. His research bridges analytic and continental traditions, engaging thinkers like Agamben, Cavell, and Wittgenstein.
His notable works include The Figure of This World: Agamben and the Question of Political Ontology (2014) and Abbas Kiarostami and Film-Philosophy (2016). He has presented globally at institutions including Oxford University, the University of Amsterdam, and the Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Abbott's current research explores naturalism, self-consciousness, and ecological thought. He supervises PhD students in areas like literary aesthetics, human rights theory, and philosophy of technology.
Abbott is active in multiple research groups: RAVE (Researching Adult and Vocational Education), PeCALE (Pedagogy, Curriculum, Assessment, and Learner Engagement), and SJIDE (Social Justice, Inclusion, and Diversity in Education). He teaches units such as Applied Ethics in Contemporary Societies and Foundations of Knowledge. His awards include the University Medal for academic excellence.
