Cato Wittusen is a Professor in the Department of Media and Social Sciences at the University of Stavanger, Faculty of Social Sciences. His academic work bridges philosophy, film theory, and aesthetics, with a particular focus on Wittgenstein, Cavell, Bazin, and Beauvoir. He is actively engaged in research and scholarly discourse, frequently presenting at international conferences.
His research interests center on film-philosophy, aesthetic experience, modernism in cinema, temporality, and the philosophical dimensions of literature and immersive media. Drawing from phenomenology and analytic philosophy, Wittusen explores how film and art engage with perception, subjectivity, and ethical understanding. His work often examines the interplay between institutional frameworks and individual agency, especially through a Wittgensteinian lens.
The recent publications and presentations show a consistent trajectory in exploring immersive technologies like VR in relation to philosophical skepticism and ethical engagement. Themes of realism, narrative depth, and cinematic modernism recur throughout his work, with a strong emphasis on the reflective role of the viewer. His scholarship connects Scandinavian and continental traditions in aesthetics.
Wittusen has contributed significantly to journals such as Film-Philosophy, Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, and Nordic Wittgenstein Review, and has participated in key academic forums including SCMS, ESA, and various Wittgenstein and Merleau-Ponty workshops. His editorial roles reflect his standing in the philosophical community.
He has advised on or participated in public lectures and film seminars, including introductions to works by Ingmar Bergman, Roberto Rossellini, and Yasujiro Ozu, demonstrating an active role in public scholarship and film curation. No information is available regarding formal student supervision or research grants.
