Masahito Sugihara is Associate Professor of Saxophone at the School of Music, Sam Houston State University. He holds a Doctor of Music and Master of Music from Northwestern University where he studied under Dr. Frederick L. Hemke, with additional studies at Temple University under Marshall Taylor and masterclasses with Claude Delangle.
His research focuses on contemporary saxophone performance and musical arrangement, with specialization in chamber music collaborations and avant-garde compositions. He actively performs transcriptions for flute/sax duo, reed quartets, and larger ensembles.
Sugihara maintains active performance engagements with Awea Duo and Amethyst Saxophone Quartet, and has collaborated with major ensembles including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York City Ballet, and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He has worked directly with composers including Alvin Lucier, Marc-Anthony Turnage, and Zhou Long to advance contemporary repertoire.
Previous academic positions include Assistant Professor roles at Morehead State University and teaching appointments at Northwestern University, Roosevelt University, and Trinity Christian College. He endorses Rico Reserve Classic Reeds as a Rico Artist.
