Marya Cohn is a Part-time Assistant Professor at The New School's School of Media Studies, specializing in screenwriting and film direction. She holds a BA from Harvard University and an MFA in filmmaking from NYU’s Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television. Her professional affiliations include Film Fatales and New York Women in Film.
Her creative work includes the narrative feature screenplay Sunny Day Flooding (in development) and the feature film The Girl in the Book, available on streaming platforms. Her short film Developing, starring Natalie Portman, won major international awards and screened at Sundance. She has directed plays at prestigious theaters like The Here Theater and Rattlestick Theater.
Cohn teaches Creative Screenwriting and Screenwriting Analysis, with upcoming courses in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026. She mentors in Vermont College of Fine Arts’ film MFA program and is affiliated with the Independent Film Project.
Her awards include Grand Prizes at the Belgian Festival Mondial du Cinéma de Court Métrage and St. Petersburg Message to Man Film Festival for Developing.
