Mary Virginia Heinlein '25 was Professor of Drama at Vassar College from 1942 until her death in 1961. She chaired the department, taught playwriting, and directed Experimental Theatre productions. A graduate of Vassar and former president of the Debate Council, she studied at Ohio State and the Theatre Guild School under mentors including Alfred Lunt and Helen Hayes.
Her research specialized in psychological realism and the 'method' acting technique pioneered by Stanislavski. Notable productions included American premieres of works by Sartre and Saroyan, and innovative interpretations of Chekhov and Lorca.
