Mary Urban (née Beegle) was an instructor of physical education, dancing, pageantry, and aesthetics at Barnard College and Columbia University’s Teachers College from 1910 onwards. Her academic career emphasized interdisciplinary arts education, blending dance theory with community engagement. She co-authored *Community Drama and Pageantry* (1914), a seminal text on outdoor performance practices. Later, she transitioned to administrative roles at The New School for Social Research, serving as Assistant Treasurer (1939–1941), Director of Promotion (1942), and Director of Public Relations (1943–1958). Her work shaped institutional fundraising and public outreach strategies.
- Education: Chalif School of Dancing (1910), studies under Isadora Duncan in Germany
Her research interests centered on the intersection of physical education and cultural expression, particularly inspired by ancient Greek aesthetics. She pioneered community theater initiatives, notably organizing the 1916 *Caliban of Yellow Sands* spectacle in NYC. Post-1933, she managed her husband Joseph Urban’s artistic estate and promoted his legacy through exhibitions and donations to Columbia University.
