Federico Finchelstein is a Professor of History at The New School for Social Research and Chair of the Department of History. He is also Director of the Janey Program in Latin American Studies. His academic career includes teaching at Brown University and earning a PhD from Cornell University. Finchelstein specializes in fascism, populism, and the intellectual history of Latin America and Europe.
His research interests encompass History and Theory; Fascism and Populism; Intellectual and Cultural History; History, Violence, and Politics; Jewish History; Holocaust Studies; and Genocide Studies. Recent publications include The Wannabe Fascists: A Guide to Understanding the Greatest Threat to Democracy (2024) and Fascist Mythologies (2022), exploring the ideological roots of authoritarianism.
Finchelstein’s work has been reviewed globally in outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and academic journals. He has received the 2011 NECLAS Best Book Prize for Transatlantic Fascism and frequently contributes to media discussions on authoritarianism and democracy.
