Dr. Mary Paine is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Washington State University's College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She also serves as Director of Industry Advancement and leads the NIH-funded Center of Excellence for Natural Product Drug Interaction Research (NaPDI Center).
Education:
- BS in Pharmacy, Oregon State University
- PhD in Pharmaceutics, University of Washington
- Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology, University of Michigan
Research Focus: Dr. Paine's research centers on clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, particularly the interactions between natural products (including botanical dietary supplements and foods) and pharmaceutical drugs. Her translational research approach combines human-derived experimental systems, mathematical modeling, and clinical studies to predict and assess these complex interactions, aiming to improve patient safety and inform evidence-based healthcare practices.
Publications: Her recent work (2020-2024) demonstrates a strong focus on cannabinoid-drug interactions, kratom pharmacokinetics, and methodological advancements in predicting natural product-drug interactions. Key themes include the development of physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models, clinical assessments of botanical substances like kratom and cannabis, and the integration of computational approaches for interaction prediction.
Scientific Awards:
- 2021 ASCPT & FDA William B. Abrams Award
- 2023 ASCPT Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award
Leadership & Service: Dr. Paine holds leadership roles in professional organizations including Co-Vice Chair of the Membrane Transporter Community (ASCPT) and Treasurer of the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics. She serves as Associate Editor for Drug Metabolism and Disposition and has previously served as Associate Editor for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. She is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Simcyp Certara and the Washington State Academy of Sciences.
Research Team & Collaborations: Through the NaPDI Center, she leads a multidisciplinary team comprising clinical pharmacologists, natural products chemists, bioinformaticists, and health communications experts. The center's current focus includes investigating interactions involving cannabis, goldenseal, kratom, cinnamon, and oregano.
