Dr. Mary Njoki is a Research Fellow (Qualitative) in Social Work at the University of Stirling. She specializes in dementia research with a focus on community participation, person-centered care, and the experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic populations.
Her current work includes:
- Leading the ESRC-funded ENACT-DEM project (Centring the lived experience of dementia within policy, practice and community development) in collaboration with teams in London, Canada, and Germany
- Previously completed the UKRI-funded Designing Housing for Healthy Cognitive Ageing (DesHCA) project in February 2024
Dr. Njoki's research interests span dementia care, ageing, community development, and the intersection of dementia with social determinants including race, gender, class, and ethnicity. She is particularly interested in developing dementia-friendly and age-friendly environments and communities that empower individuals living with dementia by offering more choices, flexibility, and control.
Her academic credentials include a PhD in dementia, an MSc in Applied Social Research, and an MSc in Social Work. Complementing her academic work, she brings seven years of professional experience as a social worker, providing valuable practical insights that inform her research approach.
Dr. Njoki's work contributes to the University of Stirling's Ageing and Dementia research program and the 'Places: Building Resilient and Sustainable Communities' research theme, with significant implications for improving community-based dementia care services.
