Professor Mary Lynch is Executive Vice Dean - Research in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. She holds a PhD in Health Economics and an MSc in Sustainable Rural Development from Queen’s University Belfast and is a Registered General Nurse. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and a trained Social Return on Investment (SROI) practitioner. She also holds honorary visiting professorships at the University of South Wales and the University of West of Scotland.
Her academic journey includes roles as Professor of Healthcare and Adult Nursing at the University of the West of Scotland (2022–2023), Senior Lecturer at Bangor University (2017–2021), and Lecturer at Cardiff University (2014–2017). She has also served as an External Examiner at Queen’s University Belfast.
Her research focuses on health economics, public health, and the application of SROI, Cost Benefit Analysis, and non-market valuation to evaluate public health interventions. She investigates nature-based social prescribing, mental health, climate change impacts on health, and the economics of home support services. Her work emphasizes community assets, rural health, and behavior change.
The recent articles highlight a strong trend in evaluating social prescribing, climate-related health risks, and workforce sustainability in home care. Her research increasingly integrates economic evaluation with public health policy, particularly in the context of climate action and health equity.

Professor Lynch is a joint Principal Investigator on a £2.29M NIHR project (WEATHER) on extreme weather and health in South Africa and co-lead on a £6.5M UKRI project on net zero and health co-benefits. She has received funding from UKRI, Welsh Government, and Skillnet. She mentors students and collaborates internationally, particularly with the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She serves on advisory boards, including the Water Research Commission, South Africa.
She leads transdisciplinary research teams focused on health, climate, and social value. Her work involves collaboration with third-sector organizations, policymakers, and healthcare providers to develop sustainable health and social care pathways.
