Mary Lou Ewald serves as the Director of Outreach in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University. Her career has been dedicated to expanding STEM educational opportunities for K-12 students through innovative programming. Governor Kay Ivey appointed her to the new Alabama STEM Council to advise on STEM-related initiatives and help prepare students for future careers. Under her leadership in 2019, COSAM's outreach programs engaged over 10,000 students, parents, teachers, and community members.
Her work emphasizes hands-on learning experiences, including drone technology, robotics competitions, and 3D printing. Dean Nicholas J. Giordano highlights her significant impact in fostering student engagement and her role in shaping effective STEM programming statewide. The Alabama STEM Council aims to address the projected 850,000 STEM jobs by 2026 by developing a Governor’s STEM 'Seal of Approval' and enhancing educational resources.
Ewald’s efforts focus on creating accessible pathways for students to explore STEM fields, blending academic outreach with practical applications to inspire the next generation of professionals.
