Mary-Hunter McDonnell is the Clarence Nickman Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, with a secondary appointment in Sociology at the School of Arts & Sciences. She holds a JD from Harvard Law School and a PhD in Management and Organizations from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Previously, she held faculty positions at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and Northwestern University Law School.
Her research focuses on organizational behavior and governance in contentious environments, including corporate misconduct, board diversity, and nonmarket strategy. She explores how social movements influence corporate practices and how organizations navigate regulatory and reputational challenges. Key themes include institutional theory, political sociology, and the dynamics of corporate governance reform.
McDonnell’s work appears in top journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and American Sociological Review. She currently serves on editorial boards for Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Academy of Management Journal. Her research has been recognized with awards for its innovative analysis of corporate accountability and social activism.
