Mary Hatcher-Skeers is a Professor of Chemistry and currently serves as Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of Faculty at Scripps College. She also holds the role of Associate Dean of Faculty for Racial Equity. Her academic journey includes a B.A. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from UC San Diego, an M.S. in Chemistry from San Francisco State University, and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Washington, followed by an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at MIT and Brandeis University.
Her research focuses on two primary areas: biophysical chemistry, using NMR and spectroscopic techniques to study molecular dynamics in DNA, proteins, and vitamins; and inclusive pedagogy, investigating classroom community-building in STEM education to enhance student retention. She teaches courses like Physical Chemistry, NMR Spectroscopy, and Biochemistry.
Her publications span structural biology, spectroscopy, and educational equity. She has contributed to textbooks like Pocketguide to Biomolecular NMR and written essays on higher education challenges. Her work bridges molecular science with equitable teaching practices.
