Mary Elizabeth Shawgo is a Professor of Biology and Department Chair of the Natural Sciences Department at Graceland University. She holds a BS in Biology with Microbiology emphasis from Northern Michigan University, completed Biochemistry and Immunology graduate courses there, and earned her PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes dynamic learning environments, storytelling to illustrate scientific concepts, and continuous improvement in pedagogy. She has authored textbooks for lower-level courses and is developing materials for upper-level classes. In 2015, her dedication was recognized with the Graceland University Alumni Board’s Excellence in Education Annual Award.
Dr. Shawgo maintains an active undergraduate research program, supervising 33 senior capstone projects. Ten students have presented research at conferences, with one co-authoring a study published in the Journal of Bacteriology (2016) exploring predator-prey interactions between Myxococcus xanthus and Bacillus subtilis.
