Mary C. Fuller is Professor and Chair of the MIT Faculty (2023-25) in the Literature department. She received her BA from Dartmouth College and PhD from Johns Hopkins University. Her research examines early English contacts with North America through exploration, commerce, and colonization documents.
Research focuses on how geographical information was captured and transmitted through maps, narratives, indexes, and material books. Her recent book analyzes Richard Hakluyt's Principal Navigations (1598-1600), a 2000-page collection documenting English voyages. Teaching spans exploration literature, poetry (medieval to contemporary), and comparative colonialisms.
Awards include the MacVicar Faculty Fellowship, Levitan Teaching Award, and Outstanding Freshman Advisor recognition. Professional fellowships include residencies at John Carter Brown Library, Huntington Library, Newbery Library, and Folger Library.
