David Hawkes is a Professor of English at Arizona State University. His research focuses on early modern literature, economic criticism, and ideological analysis. He holds degrees from Oxford University and Columbia University, including a PhD. Hawkes has authored seven books, including Idols of the Marketplace and Shakespeare and Economic Criticism, and edited works by John Milton and John Bunyan. His articles span journals like The Nation and Times Literary Supplement, addressing themes such as usury, representation, and modernist economics. He has held fellowships at the Folger Shakespeare Library and Huntington Library, and has lectured globally. His recent work critiques financial systems and explores the intersection of religion and early modern literature.
