Mary Buchinger Bodwell serves as Professor of English and Communication Studies at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS University) within the School of Arts and Sciences, where she teaches in the Health Humanities program and maintains an active literary career as an award-winning poet.
Her academic foundation includes:
- Ph.D. in Linguistics from Boston University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
- M.A. in Linguistics and TESOL from Ohio University
- B.S. in English and Elementary Education from Northern Michigan University
Buchinger's scholarly work centers on Poetry, Interpersonal Communication, and Writing Pedagogy, with significant contributions to Discourse Analysis and Health Humanities. Her research examines empathy through transnational landscapes, medical narratives, and experimental language forms, informed by her Peace Corps service in Ecuador and rural Michigan upbringing. This interdisciplinary approach bridges linguistic theory with creative practice in health-focused educational contexts.
Her recent publications reveal consistent thematic engagement with nature, illness, and border-crossing narratives across experimental poetic forms. Works like Virology (2022) explore medical humanities through floral metaphors, while Navigating the Reach (2023) extends her investigation of ecological and emotional landscapes using innovative structural techniques that challenge conventional poetic boundaries.
Major recognitions include:
- Cambridge Arts Council Sidewalk Poetry Contest Winner (2018)
- MCPHS School of Arts & Sciences Teaching Award (2021)
- Cambridge Poetry Ambassador Residency (2016)
- New England Poetry Club's Daniel Varoujan Award (2005)
- Firman Houghton Award from the New England Poetry Club (2011)
Buchinger has secured substantial external funding including Spencer Foundation grants totaling $57,850 for ESL research projects and cultural council awards for community poetry initiatives. Her administrative leadership as former president (2016-2022) of the New England Poetry Club—founded by Robert Frost—and current board membership demonstrates deep institutional commitment to Boston's literary ecosystem.
She actively participates in national organizations including the College English Association and Associated Writing Programs, while maintaining community partnerships through residencies like Norton Island (2016) and Somerville Library workshops, fostering poetry engagement across academic and public spheres.
