Mary Bryna Sanger is a University Professor of Policy and Management at The New School, specifically within the Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment. She holds a tenured faculty appointment in Urban Policy Analysis and Management. Previously, she served as Deputy Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (2009–2022), operational head of the Provost's Office, and Dean of Milano (1999–2000). Her academic career spans roles as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Chair of Urban Policy at Milano (1993–1999).
Education: Bryna earned an AB with honors from Vassar College and a PhD from The Heller School, Brandeis University. Her research focuses on public policy, performance management, welfare reform, and leadership in public institutions. She has led projects at the Gordon Public Policy Center (innovation and leadership), the National Civic League (performance measurement systems), and the Brookings Institution (welfare reform privatization).
Research and Awards: Bryna has authored influential books like The Welfare Marketplace (2003) and After the Cure (2000). She received the Einhorn Research Award for work on performance measurement systems. United Neighborhood Houses honored her as a 'New Yorker who makes a difference' (2009).
Consulting and Leadership: She advises city/state governments, including the Spitzer administration’s human services transition committee and NYC’s performance-management system. She chairs United Neighborhood Houses and has held leadership roles at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. Her editorial contributions include journals like the Journal of Public Policy Analysis and Management and Policy Studies Journal.
