Mary Beth Stein is an Associate Professor of German and Director of German Literature at George Washington University (GWU), part of the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. She joined GWU in 1997 after earning her Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1993 and teaching at Haverford and Carleton Colleges. Her research focuses on German cultural studies, Berlin studies, and 19th-20th century German literature, with a specialization in East German memory culture and the legacy of the Berlin Wall. She was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at Humboldt University of Berlin (2000-2001), researching in the Stasi Archives. Notable awards include GWU’s Bender Teaching Award (2002) and a Mount Vernon Faculty Fellowship (2018-2019).
Her current book project examines East German life histories pre- and post-Wall collapse. Research interests include Cold War spy narratives, Stasi detention memorials, and post-socialist societies. She has published widely on German film, oral history, and political memory. Her work bridges cultural analysis with historical inquiry, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to 20th-century German history.
