Mary Beth Brown, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She joined UW in December 2018 after being promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Indiana University. Prior to academia, Dr. Brown practiced as a licensed physical therapist for nearly a decade in hospital-based outpatient settings.
Dr. Brown's educational background includes:
- Postdoctoral fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Indiana University School of Medicine
- PhD in Applied Physiology from Georgia Institute of Technology
- Master's in Physical Therapy from University of Miami School of Medicine
- Undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Lenoir-Rhyne College
Dr. Brown directs the Brown Lab for Optimization of Exercise as Therapy in Cardiopulmonary Disease, which focuses on improving how exercise is used as medicine for patients with lung diseases. Her research addresses the gap in data needed to appropriately prescribe exercise for specific patient groups, particularly those with pulmonary arterial hypertension, pulmonary embolism, cystic fibrosis, and lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Through both clinical and animal studies, her lab defines the physiological and biochemical consequences and functional outcomes following acute and chronic exercise in lung disease to optimize exercise prescription.
Her research program is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH, The American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant, The Pulmonary Hypertension Association, The American Thoracic Society, and The Lymphangioleiomyomatosis Foundation. Dr. Brown has published extensively on exercise interventions in cardiopulmonary disease, with recent work focusing on mobile health platforms to deliver exercise prescriptions for patients with interstitial lung disease and LAM.
Dr. Brown has received several notable awards:
- New Investigator Award from the American College of Sports Medicine (2016)
- Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Research Award from the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association (2015)
- 'Emerging Excellence in Research' from the School of Health and Rehabilitation (2014)
- 2022 Established Investigator Award from The LAM Foundation
Dr. Brown mentors numerous students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and PhD program in Rehabilitation Science. Her current research projects include "LAMFit," an mHealth program to expand access to exercise benefits for LAM patients, and studies investigating exercise interventions for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Her lab employs both human clinical studies and rodent models to investigate exercise hemodynamics and physiological responses to acute and chronic exercise.
