Werner Seeger is Professor of Internal Medicine and Section Head of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Justus Liebig University Giessen School of Medicine. He serves as Medical Executive Director of the Department of Internal Medicine, Chairman of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), Chairman of the Universities of Giessen & Marburg Lung Center (UGMLC), and Chairman of the Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System (ECCPS). Additional leadership roles include Director of the Max-Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research and External Scientific Member at the Biomedicine Research Institute in Buenos Aires.
His research spans pulmonary fibrosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, lung physiology, pulmonary hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung infections, and lung cellular/molecular biology. With a citation record of 49,375 total citations and an h-index of 103, his work bridges basic science and clinical applications in respiratory medicine.
