Mary Barker is Professor of Psychology and Behavioural Science at the University of Southampton, with joint appointments in the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Agder, Norway, and holds honorary appointments at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, and University College London.
Her research focuses on adolescent health and well-being, particularly how participatory approaches, social activism, and digital tools can improve dietary and physical activity habits. She leads the NIHR Programme Grant for Applied Research EACH-B (Engaging Adolescents in Changing Behaviour) and collaborates with the TALENT network in low-and-middle-income countries. Barker’s work includes longitudinal studies on pandemic resilience and digital interventions for behavioral change.
Recent publications highlight trends in adolescent health communication (2025), generative AI for narrative analysis (2025), pandemic-era nutrition interventions (2024), and digital health tool implementation (2024). These papers span global health, behavioral science, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
