Mary Anne Evans serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources and works as a Research Ecologist at the USGS Great Lakes Science Center's Restoration and Conservation Science branch.
She earned her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Michigan focusing on arctic lake phytoplankton ecology, followed by post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment (studying hypoxic "dead zones" in Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico) and Michigan State University (researching Michigan recreational lakes).
Her research investigates drivers of harmful and nuisance algal blooms (HABs/NABs) in the Great Lakes, including nutrient/light/dreissenid influences on benthic blooms, cyanobacterial HABs in western Lake Erie, and river-influenced nearshore dynamics. She emphasizes translating complex HABs/NABs science for diverse audiences through interdisciplinary aquatic ecology approaches.
At the USGS Great Lakes Science Center, she contributes to the Restoration and Conservation Science branch's mission of ecological preservation and rehabilitation across Great Lakes ecosystems.
