Mike McKay is the Executive Director of the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) at the University of Windsor. He leads research initiatives focused on environmental science, water quality, and ecosystem health, with a particular emphasis on the Great Lakes and international collaborations.
His research interests span algal blooms, water quality monitoring, and pandemic preparedness via wastewater surveillance. He has spearheaded projects like Erie Hack to address Lake Erie’s challenges and collaborated with NASA on analyzing satellite imagery. His work extends globally, including studies in Kenya and China to tackle freshwater algal blooms and contamination issues.
He advises students such as MSc candidates Dennis Otieno (Detroit River water quality) and Emily Varga (Lake Victoria algal blooms). Funded projects include federal grants for Great Lakes restoration and pandemic preparedness, totaling millions of dollars. His contributions have been recognized through leadership roles in organizations like the International Association for Great Lakes Research and partnerships with institutions such as the University of Michigan and Yunnan University, China.
