Mary-Alice Daniel is an Associate Research Scholar and Lecturer with Princeton's Program in African Studies. A cross-genre author, she publishes poetry, critical essays, and literary translations appearing in American Poetry Review, Yale Review, and Callaloo. Her memoir A Coastline Is an Immeasurable Thing (Ecco/HarperCollins 2022) was a Kirkus Best Nonfiction selection and People's Book of the Week.
Her poetry collection Mass for Shut-Ins won the Yale Younger Poets Prize (2023) and California Book Award. She holds a Ph.D. from USC and has held positions at Brown University, Washington University, and Scripps College. She mentors emerging writers through PEN America's Emerging Voices Fellowship.
