Martín Veiga is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, University College Cork (UCC), and Director of the Irish Centre for Galician Studies. He holds a PhD from NUI Cork and a Licenciatura from the University of Santiago de Compostela. His research focuses on contemporary Galician and Irish poetry, ecocriticism, literary translation, and mobility narratives, with a particular emphasis on post-human intersections in literature. He has published extensively on Galician poet Antón Avilés de Taramancos and edited volumes on ecopoetry, travel writing, and Galician-English cultural exchanges.
Veiga’s academic roles include serving as Head of SPLAS (2021–2024) and co-editor of Galicia 21: Journal of Contemporary Galician Studies. He is a member of research projects such as 'Post-Human Intersections in Irish and Galician Literatures' (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) and 'Greening Modern Languages: Research and Teaching' (Bangor University, Ohio State University).
His awards include the 2017 Premio Pedrón de Honra for promoting Galician culture internationally. He has authored six award-winning poetry collections in Galician, including Diary of Crosses Green (translated into English by Keith Payne) and Catro cuartetos (a translation of T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets). His translations of John Berger, Anne Michaels, and Irish poets like Seán Virgo highlight his commitment to cross-cultural literary exchange.
Veiga has secured research grants totaling over €129,000, including projects on Galician narrative translation and the work of Blanca Varela. His teaching includes directing the Higher Diploma in Arts (Spanish) at UCC and collaborating with institutions like the Moore Institute at NUI Galway. He actively participates in international conferences and symposia, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to literature and environmental humanities.
His academic contributions span over 30 books, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles, alongside poetry collections and translations. Key works include A Different Eden: Ecopoetry from Ireland and Galicia (2021) and Here and Beyond: Narratives of Travel and Mobility in Iberian Culture (2022). He is a sought-after speaker on topics such as eco-poetics, translation as creative practice, and Galician-Irish literary connections.
