Prof. Martti Nissinen is Professor of Old Testament studies at the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Theology. He holds a Th.D. from the University of Helsinki and is a distinguished scholar in Biblical studies with particular expertise in prophetic literature and gender studies within ancient religious contexts.
His research focuses on two primary areas:
- The prophetic phenomenon across the Ancient Near East
- Gender issues including love poetry, homoeroticism, and masculinity in the Bible and ancient Eastern Mediterranean
Nissinen's scholarship challenges traditional interpretations by providing historical and cultural context to ancient religious texts, with significant contributions to understanding prophecy across different ancient cultures and pioneering research on gender and sexuality in biblical contexts.
His major recognitions include:
- Membership in the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters
- Honorary membership in the Society for Old Testament Study
Prof. Nissinen previously served as president of the Foundation for the Finnish Institute in the Middle East (2010-2021), demonstrating his commitment to international scholarly collaboration and research in the region.
