Fabio Martinon is an Associate Professor at the Department of Immunobiology within the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne (UNIL). His research focuses on the intersection between cellular stress and inflammatory signaling pathways, particularly in the context of autoinflammatory diseases and cancer. He has mentored numerous PhD, Master’s, and SUR programme students, and his work is supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure at the Center of Immunity and Infection (CIIL).
- Education: PhD (2003, University of Lausanne)
- Appointments: Postdoc at Harvard School of Public Health (2006–2010); Assistant Professor (2010–2017), then Associate Professor (2017–present) at UNIL
His research program investigates how cellular stress responses regulate inflammatory pathways, including the NLRP3 inflammasome, ER stress signaling, and stress-induced adaptations. Recent work has uncovered mechanisms linking protease activity (e.g., DDI2), metabolic reprogramming, and organelle dysfunction to inflammation in diseases like cystic fibrosis, multiple myeloma, and autoimmune arthritis.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a consistent focus on inflammasome biology, ER stress, and their roles in autoinflammatory syndromes and cancer. Key subfields include proteotoxic stress adaptation, macrophage polarization, DDI2-mediated NRF1 activation, and targeted modulation of inflammatory pathways.
Martinon’s laboratory provides an ideal environment for postdoctoral researchers, with access to cutting-edge CIIL facilities and a strong national and international collaboration network. The department’s location at the research campus in Epalinges, North of Lausanne, enables daily interactions with leading scientists in immunology and infectious diseases.
