Prof. Martina Schmidt is a Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the University of Groningen, affiliated with both the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Her research focuses on molecular pharmacology and translational medicine, particularly in chronic inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and respiratory diseases such as COPD. She leads the Molecular Pharmacology group, exploring signaling pathways involving cAMP, Epac, and cofilin in disease mechanisms.
Prof. Schmidt’s expertise includes drug discovery targeting signalosomes and cellular compartments. She holds positions such as Honorary Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society and Editor of the British Journal of Pharmacology. Her research integrates in vivo/ex vivo models with cutting-edge techniques like microfluidics and precision lung slices.
Key achievements include identifying novel roles of Epac2 in Alzheimer’s memory retrieval and developing therapeutic strategies against ferroptosis. She has authored over 230 publications and received awards including the Teacher Award for Bachelor Pharmacy and the Avril McDonald Prize.
Her work emphasizes translational research, bridging molecular mechanisms to clinical applications in chronic diseases, with a focus on innovative drug targets and precision medicine approaches.
