Dr. H.A.M. (Rick) Mutsaers is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Science and Engineering, embedded in the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy (division Pharmaceutical Technology & Biopharmacy). His work focuses on renal fibrosis and the development of precision-cut kidney slices as a translational ex-vivo model to study disease mechanisms and evaluate anti-fibrotic therapeutics.
Research interests centre on:
- Molecular pathogenesis of kidney fibrosis
- Prostaglandin-E2 receptor signalling and EP-receptor antagonism
- Indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) as a fibrotic target
- Ex-vivo human and rodent kidney slice cultures for drug screening
- Biomarker discovery in chronic kidney disease
Across the most recent publications (2020-2023) he consistently integrates in-vivo rodent models (e.g. unilateral ureteral obstruction) with ex-vivo precision-cut tissue slices to bridge pre-clinical and human pathophysiology, emphasising pharmacological intervention against fibrotic signalling pathways.
Collaborations & output: 58 research outputs recorded since 2015, including peer-reviewed articles, reviews, editorials and book chapters, with multiple open-access contributions and cross-disciplinary international collaborations (Denmark, Germany, Australia).
