Martina Mullaney is a visual artist and Post-Doctoral Researcher on the IRC/AHRC funded Feminist Art Making Histories Research Project, a collaboration between IADT and Loughborough University. She holds an MA from the Royal College of Art, London and an AHRC-funded Ph.D. in Art from the University of Reading.
Her educational background:
- Master of Arts (MA) from the Royal College of Art, London
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Art from the University of Reading (AHRC funded)
Mullaney's research critically investigates how art centered on maternity transcends its intended audience, operating at the intersection of feminist theory, social activism, and community engagement. Her practice spans documentary, radio, moving image, video installation, photography, and audio art, challenging political and social narratives around motherhood through experimental media.
She has received significant recognition:
- Red Mansion Art Prize for her work in China
- AHRC Doctoral Fellowship supporting her Ph.D. research
Mullaney's grant-funded work includes British Council residencies in Sri Lanka and Tbilisi, Georgia, and leadership of the Missing Mother Conference (2020). She co-edits a forthcoming publication on maternal art with Demeter Press and founded the Enemies of Good Art collective in London to sustain creative practice post-childbirth. Her projects consistently receive cross-national funding from bodies like IRC and AHRC.
Her Enemies of Good Art collective serves as a community-based platform for feminist art experimentation, directly linking her maternal experience to collaborative artistic production and public discourse on women's liberation.
