Professor Martin Ward is a Professor of Chinese and Japanese Translation at the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds. He is also the AHC Faculty Academic Lead for Global Campus Experience and University Lead for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). A Leeds alumnus with a BA in Chinese and Japanese Studies (1999), he earned his M.Ed and PhD in Asian Culture from Hiroshima University as a Monbusho Scholar.
His research centers on translation studies and pedagogy, with specializations in Chinese political discourse and the translation of wartime Japanese military archives. He founded the East Asian Translation Pedagogy Advance (EATPA) network in 2020, uniting over 100 academics globally. His scholarship explores COIL integration, employability through translation education, and intercultural communication.
Ward’s publications span academic journals like The Translator, co-edited volumes on translation pedagogy (Routledge, 2024), and the translation of significant historical texts such as Insights into Japanese Imperialism (Vols. 1–3) and chapters in The Communist Party of China: A Concise History. His recent work emphasizes digital and collaborative learning frameworks in translation education.

Ward supervises PhD students in Chinese and Japanese translation and leads institutional efforts to internationalize the curriculum through COIL. He is a Fellow of Advance HE, a member of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST), and an Overseas Expert of the Translators Association of China (TAC). He also serves on the QAA panel revising the Languages, Cultures and Societies Subject Benchmark Statement. His work bridges academic research, pedagogical innovation, and global educational collaboration.
