Kevin Ward

Kevin Ward is Professor of Human Geography and Director of the Manchester Urban Institute at the University of Manchester. He has been with the university since 1997, progressing through the ranks from Research Associate to Professor. His administrative leadership includes Director of the Manchester Urban Institute (2016-present), Director of External Relations (2012-2015), and Director of cities@manchester (2010-2016).

Ward received his PhD in Geography from the University of Manchester in 1998, following an MA in Social Research Methods (1995) and an MA in Transport Economics from the University of Leeds (1992). His academic journey began with a BA (Hons) in Economics and Geography from Middlesex University (1991).

His research focuses on urban policy and politics, with particular interest in how policies travel between cities and get adapted in different contexts. He explores urban governance, financial models for infrastructure, and the impact of digital technologies on policy processes. Theoretically, his work rethinks what is meant by 'the urban' in urban politics, examining how elements from different places are assembled to constitute particular urban political realms. Methodologically, he employs multi-site fieldwork to trace the circuits, networks, and webs through which policies move.

Ward's recent publications examine the intersection of policy mobilities and digital technologies, US-China competition in global infrastructure, and China's growing influence in urban development worldwide. His work shows a clear trajectory toward examining how digitalization is transforming urban policy circulation and the geopolitical dimensions of urban infrastructure development.

Ward has supervised over 20 PhD students to completion and currently mentors several doctoral candidates across diverse urban research topics. His research has been supported by multiple projects including 'The age of infrastructure: China as a global urban agent' and 'Imagining urban futures programme.' He regularly presents at international conferences and has spoken at universities worldwide including in Atlanta, Berlin, Calgary, Stockholm, and Toronto.

He maintains active research collaborations across the globe, with significant work focused on UK, US, and Chinese urban contexts. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable cities and communities, particularly through examining equitable urban governance and sustainable infrastructure financing models.
