Kevin Archer

Kevin Archer is Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography, Environment, and Planning at the University of South Florida. Holding a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on urban issues, globalization, and the production of nature. Professor Archer's research follows two primary tracks: the social construction/production of nature in ecological restoration and environmental policy, and the processes of globalization as they relate to the cultures and politics of cities and regions. His work bridges geography, political science, environmental studies, and urban sociology, examining how global forces reshape urban spaces and environmental governance. He has written in a student-friendly style, beginning with his "A Folk Guide to Geography as Holistic Science" article and exemplified in his book The City.

His publications demonstrate consistent focus on urban studies and globalization, with particular attention to how cities in the Global North and South navigate contemporary challenges. His works employ interdisciplinary approaches combining political economy, cultural analysis, and environmental perspectives to understand urban transformation. Key publications include The City: The Basics (2012), which provides a comprehensive overview of urban studies, and Cultures of Globalization (2009), which examines global cultural dynamics.

As Department Chair, Professor Archer oversees academic programs while maintaining an active scholarly agenda. His teaching philosophy emphasizes making complex geographical concepts accessible through clear, engaging writing that bridges academic rigor and student comprehension.
