Dr. Martin Thomas is a Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Epidemiology and Honorary Specialist Rheumatology & Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at Keele University's School of Medicine. He leads research on osteoarthritis epidemiology, flare management, and musculoskeletal pain in primary care. His work includes observational studies, clinical trials, and collaborations with global researchers. He teaches statistics and epidemiology and supervises students in clinical academic programs.
Education: BSc (Human Movement Science), MSc (Sport Psychology), PhD (Clinical Epidemiology from Keele University). Awards include the Arthritis Research UK Silver Medal Prize. He contributes to initiatives like the Clinical Assessment Study of the Foot (CASF) and the International Foot and Ankle Osteoarthritis Consortium.
His research focuses on osteoarthritis flares, midfoot osteoarthritis classification, and musculoskeletal pain in children. He has secured over £6M in grant funding and collaborates with institutions in the UK, Australia, and the US. Clinically, he works at Haywood Hospital, Midlands Partnership NHS Trust.
Publications span 50+ peer-reviewed articles on topics like gout impairments, knee brace efficacy, and plantar heel pain management. Ongoing projects include the TREADON trial on foot pain treatments and the CAM-Pain Programme addressing pediatric musculoskeletal pain.
