Edward Roddy is a Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Keele and an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at the Haywood Hospital. He leads Keele’s inflammatory conditions research programme and directs the Keele-Haywood Academic Rheumatology Group. His academic roles include co-leading the university’s rheumatology research and providing medical leadership for the Keele Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).
Educated at the University of Nottingham (MD 1997), he specialized in rheumatology training across Nottingham and Western Australia. His career progression includes roles as Clinical Lecturer (2007), Senior Lecturer (2011), Reader (2017), and Professor (2021). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
Roddy’s research focuses on gout epidemiology, treatment effectiveness, and comorbidity associations. He leads cohort studies and clinical trials in gout, foot/ankle osteoarthritis, and plantar heel pain. Notable collaborations include international teams in Australia, New Zealand, France, Sweden, and the USA. He has secured over £14M in grant funding and published over 170 peer-reviewed articles.
Teaching activities include directing Keele CTU’s annual randomized trial course, undergraduate medical training, and postgraduate rheumatology education. He contributes to national guidelines (e.g., NICE Gout Guideline Committee) and professional societies, including leadership roles in the British Society for Rheumatology’s Crystal Arthritis and Foot Health Special Interest Groups.
Key awards include his Royal College of Physicians Fellowship. His work emphasizes translating evidence into clinical practice, with a focus on improving outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
