Dr Martin Stoermer is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), University of Queensland. He specializes in medicinal and organic chemistry, focusing on viral proteases from Flaviviruses (e.g., Dengue, West Nile) and Coronaviruses (e.g., SARS-CoV-2). His research combines chemical synthesis and molecular modeling to design inhibitors targeting these viruses. Since 2012, he has been on extended medical leave but continues research as an Adjunct.
Education: Studied organic chemistry at the University of Sydney, joined UQ in 1993, worked at Bayer in Germany (1996), and returned to UQ in 2000 to join the Fairlie lab. Key roles include developing antiviral inhibitors, protease structure elucidation, and peptide drug design.
Research interests include viral protease inhibition, molecular modeling, and drug discovery. His work spans Flaviviruses, Coronaviruses, and HIV protease inhibitors. Recent studies focus on SARS-CoV-2 proteases and homology modeling.
Publications emphasize viral protease structures, inhibitor development, and cyclic peptides. He has contributed to grants for equipment like NMR spectrometers and computational platforms. Supervised PhD students in protease inhibitor projects.
